DIY Oil Change — 2024 Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe Racer
Performing your own oil change on the Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe is one of the simplest and most effective ways to maintain engine performance, responsiveness, and long-term reliability. The key is clean workmanship, correct torque values, and using the proper oil specification.
What You’ll Need
Before starting, make sure you have everything ready:
Engine oil: 10W-40 full synthetic (JASO MA or MA2 certified)
Oil filter (OEM or high-quality equivalent)
OEM Part Number: Kawasaki 16097-0008 (common Z900RS filter)
Drain plug crush washer
OEM Part: Kawasaki 11061-0027
Socket / wrench set
Torque wrench
Oil catch pan
Funnel
Gloves and clean shop rags
Step 1 — Warm Up the Engine
Let the engine idle for 3–5 minutes.
Warm oil flows more efficiently and carries suspended contaminants out of the engine more effectively.
Step 2 — Position the Bike
Place the motorcycle on a level surface.
If available, use a rear stand to keep the bike upright and stable. A level position ensures accurate draining and correct oil level measurement during refill.
Step 3 — Drain the Engine Oil
Locate the engine oil drain bolt underneath the engine
Position an oil catch pan beneath it
Remove the drain bolt carefully
Allow oil to drain completely (5–10 minutes)

Tip:
Inspect the magnetic drain plug. Fine metallic paste is normal; larger chunks or flakes are not.
Torque Specification — Drain Plug
Drain plug torque: 29 Nm (21 lb-ft)
Drain plug torque: 29 Nm (21 lb-ft)
Always install a new crush washer before reinstallation.
Step 4 — Replace the Oil Filter
Locate the oil filter on the engine side
Use an oil filter wrench if required
Remove and discard the old filter
Lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh oil
Install by hand until gasket contacts, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn

Oil capacity (with filter):
✔ ~3.5 to 3.8 litres (check dip window after fill)
Start with ~90% capacity, then fine-tune after running engine.
Step 7 — Check Level & Start Engine
Allow oil to settle for a few minutes
Start engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds
Shut off and wait 3–5 minutes
Check oil level via sight glass

Service Interval Recommendation
For the 2024 Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe Racer:
Normal riding: every 5,000 km or 1 year
Aggressive / spirited riding: 3,000–4,000 km
Severe conditions (short trips, cold starts): more frequent changes recommended
Always prioritize oil condition over mileage.
Final Notes
The Z900RS platform rewards consistent maintenance. Clean oil changes ensure:
Smooth throttle response
Stable oil pressure
Reduced engine wear
Long-term reliability of the inline-4
